HATHA YOGA HISTORY

Hatha Yoga Ibiza Lineage

Hatha Yoga Ibiza's lineage originates from the coveted Indian tradition, tracing back to some of the most influential yogis in history. The lineage begins with Shyama Charan Lahiri, the founder of the kriya yoga school, who is best known as Lahiri Mahasaya. Lahiri Mahasaya's teachings were later introduced to the West by Paramahamsa Yogananda, who is regarded as the "Father of Yoga in the West." Yogananda's vision was to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western religions, and his teachings led to the creation of the Self-Realization Fellowship, an organization that has introduced millions to the practices of meditation and kriya yoga.

Yogananda's younger brother, Bishnu Charan Ghosh, was also an influential figure in the lineage of Hatha Yoga Ibiza. A bodybuilder and hatha yogi, Ghosh was introduced to yoga by his brother at the Ranchi School for Boys in Bengal. He went on to found the College of Physical Education in Calcutta and wrote extensively, influencing the development of modern yoga as exercise in India.

Ghosh's teachings emphasized the fusion of traditional asanas from hatha yoga with physical culture and muscle manipulation techniques, leading to a style of yoga that was both powerful and holistic. His method of "Body Perfection by Will" relied on the use of weights and specialised apparatuses, and his teachings were deeply influenced by Yogananda's Yogoda method.

Hatha Yoga Ibiza is deeply rooted in the rich tradition of Indian yoga, with a lineage that is traced back to some of the most celebrated yogis in history. Esteemed yoga researcher, Mark Singleton, has argued that the method developed by Ghosh played a significant role in shaping modern postural yoga. Ghosh's teachings also heavily influenced the development of Sivananda yoga's sequence of 12 basic asanas.

Ghosh's sequence of 84 asanas is still revered today and has been perpetuated by many esteemed practitioners, including Tony Sanchez. Sanchez, who has been practising this form of yoga for over 40 years, trained with Bikram Choudhury, Ghosh's student, and later at Ghosh’s school himself in Kolkata. Sanchez is an acclaimed expert in this lineage and has authored several books on the subject.

Sebastien Carincotte, who has practised this form of Hatha yoga for over 16 years, has trained extensively with Tony Sanchez, in Mexico and Spain, in order to deepen his understanding of this lineage and the evolution of this ancient practice.

Sebastien's dedication and expertise in this discipline is reflected in the way he transmits his knowledge to the next generation. His teachings are particularly suited to those seeking a sophisticated and transformative yoga experience.
